Current Studio Concerns
This gallery features work that is still being made in the studio. Some of the work is partial or unfinished. I am currently working on a series called Fields.
In these ‘Field’ paintings I am drawing together characters taken from a number of sources to create new narratives and interpretations. The figures are painted in oil paint against a flat ground (coloured varnish on a plywood).
My inspiration for the series came from two sources. The first, the play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (Stoppard 1966) and the second, the children’s graphic game ActionTransfers (Letraset 1969). In both cases characters find themselves in new and unpredictable contexts. As this group of paintings developed, I became very interested by individual ‘types’ or characters and how they could be used as ‘players’ within a field of action. A more contemporary reference is ‘Reality TV’, a sort of I Am a Celebrity Get Me out of Here; the Art History Episode.
