Synthetic Romantic Painting (Wald) 2009
Oil on Hammerite
55x55cm

This painting is based on a series of photographs taken on a bright mid-winters day in Formby woods. The combination of low, sharp, sunlight and the repeated verticals of the trees reduced the landscape to a set of abstract forms. The painting is made with traditional oil paint on a ground of Hammerite, a very glossy and viscous commercial paint.
The wald (wood) of the title is a reference to Schubert’s song cycle Winterreise (1827).
This work belongs to The Williamson Museum and Art Gallery. Birkenhead
